Youth
Introduction
As a youth, in a developing body, it is important to prioritize physical and mental well-being. These crucial stages determine life outcomes in the long run. The purpose of this page is to guide and educate on youth substance and drug use, treatment options, and building sustainable habits. We want to encourage priority on mental health and on establishing healthy relationships. We acknowledge that this can be an awkward and overwhelming phase with many ups and downs so we want to help you make the best possible decisions.
Drug and Alcohol Use
Why do youth actually use drugs and alcohol? There are a variety of reasons why one might use them. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that one of the main reasons is peer pressure. That is, using drugs or drinking alcohol because their friends are encouraging them or simply because they see them doing it as well. The goal becomes fitting in. On the other hand, trying a drug or alcohol can also be for the feeling of excitement and solely for experimentation.
Youth also often use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism, including to cope with stress, depression, and trauma. Using these substances may provide temporary relief, but has long-term, detrimental effects. If dealing with drug or alcohol abuse, other parties are likely to be involved, such as a psychologist, social worker and/or law enforcement. This team of individuals will ensure a safe recovery. More information and resources are provided below regarding treatment.
